Theory - general information

What do we measure?

The basic engine parameter is torque transmitting by a crank – shaft, whereas such a popular and common used datum as engine power is only a maths function given from value of torque and rotation. Making it clear – torque is responsible for speeding – up but power for top speed. That is – the greater torque is the better a vehicle speeds up and easier drives up a mountain.

How do we measure?

Testing is the easiest way of measurement of a car or motorcycle performance. While doing it you can check the time of speeding – up from 0 to 100km/h with a stopwatch, the time of reaching first 400 metres or the time of speeding in a particular gear (flexibility testing). However, a serious difficulty of measuring engine parameters is that they depend on external conditions like: the pressure of atmosphere, temperature of the air supplying engine). For example, a car looses 1% of its power per each 100 metres of a hill). As a result, the power of an engine can be different in different circumstances. In other words, the results gained from road tests can bear a great number of errors that stem from influence of environmental conditions as well as errors of a speedometer.

To make comparison of the parameters of different engines more reliable they must be tested in similar conditions. That is why some standards exist which indicate precisely the conditions of testing engines. It is not possible to follow all the rules of testing, so that the best method of measuring the car parameters is a test bench because it enables carrying it out.

A test bench is a device which carries out tests of vehicles without driving, and each test is carried out without any individual approach which can occur while road testing. With a little help of a test bench we can precisely indicate such engine parameters like power or torque
